These included those in the secret apparatus, fellow travellers, and ‘subversives’. With the exception of the section F3 history (KV 4/56) in the Second World War, the release of relevant general files relating to the CPGB has been disappointing. There has been little that has been declassified apart from the ex-Scotland House material on the King Street raid and the imprisonment of the leaders in 1925, and the Arcos Raid in the 1920s. The material on the Zinoviev letter still remains classified, although it has been seen by Gillian Shepherd in ‘ “A most extraordinary mysterious business”: The Zinoviev Letter of 1924’ (History Notes 14, Foreign and Commonwealth Office, February 1999).

So was the presence of Special Branch scribes at public meetings, and in secret cubbyholes to record meetings of the CPGB central and political committees. The B6 ‘watchers’ were normally operated against Soviet embassy staff, but were also used in special surveillance operations involving members of the CPGB. Both Harry Pollitt and Wal Hannington tell amusing stories about Special Branch intrusion in their autobiographies; the former was tailed on his honeymoon. M section also infiltrated agents into the Communist Party.
