The Three Companions give an entirely different account of the incident in Chapter X I : their Legend does not attribute the act to B. Giles by name, but to " a certain secular brother " : the whole setting is different, and yet there are certain remarkable similarities of diction between L2 and Three Companions, which do not exist as between Lr and L2.

There may be a good deal of his handiwork, probably in a derived form, in the Speculum Perfectionis : it is generally admitted that he was one of the traditional " Three Companions," but to what extent we possess their original work either in the document now known as " Legenda Trium Sociorutn " or in any other form is a problem of great complexity. Nor can Fr. P. Francisci" be accepted without reserve,1 though he has made out a good case. Consequently there is not at present any fixed standard of comparison by which the Leonine authorship of either Li or L2 can be tested.
