The H T W technology manufactured by Rheinbraun 52 Beyond Compliance was successfully applied for the synthesis of chemicals (methanol) from lignites at Berrenrath (Germany) between 1986 and 1997. The plant was shut down at the end of 1997, as at the time, the process was no longer considered economically viable. A similar commercial plant has been operating in Finland since 1988, essentially with peat for the production of ammonia. A 140 t coal/d pressurized H T W gasification plant was also commissioned and built at Wesseling (Germany) in 1989, to supplement the research and development of the H T W technology for coal use and particularly to study its future application to an IGCC process for power generation.
The Claus sulfur recovery process is conventional technology used to remove sulfur-based compounds from fossil fuels. Its use can be found in the sulfur recovery portion of most refinery operations. Automatic, continuous, and accurate monitoring of H2S and SO 2 are critical factors in the optimization of the Claus process.
