The H T W technology manufactured by Rheinbraun 52 Beyond Compliance was successfully applied for the synthesis of chemicals (methanol) from lignites at Berrenrath (Germany) between 1986 and 1997. The plant was shut down at the end of 1997, as at the time, the process was no longer considered economically viable. A similar commercial plant has been operating in Finland since 1988, essentially with peat for the production of ammonia. A 140 t coal/d pressurized H T W gasification plant was also commissioned and built at Wesseling (Germany) in 1989, to supplement the research and development of the H T W technology for coal use and particularly to study its future application to an IGCC process for power generation.

The Claus sulfur recovery process is conventional technology used to remove sulfur-based compounds from fossil fuels. Its use can be found in the sulfur recovery portion of most refinery operations. Automatic, continuous, and accurate monitoring of H2S and SO 2 are critical factors in the optimization of the Claus process. The main reactions of interest during the Claus sulfur recovery process are Reaction Furnace: 3H2S + 3/202 --) SO 2 + H 2 0 + 2H2S Catalytic Converter: 2H2S + S O 2 --~ 2H20 + 3 S For efficient conversion it is important to control the stoichiometry in the sulfur kiln.

The annual production of slag (85 % of the ash in weight) and fly-ash (15% of the ash in weight) are, respectively, 120,000 t and 12,000 t per year. 2 % (net efficiency of 42%). Fluidized-Bed Technologies HTW The H T W (high-temperature WinNer) process was first developed by Rheinbraun in Germany to gasify lignites to produce a reducing gas for iron ore. The gasifier consists of a refractory-lined pressure vessel equipped with a water jacket. Feedstocks are pressurized in a lock hopper located below the coal storage bin and pneumatically conveyed to a coal bin.
