It is a concept in teaching which is, of course, hard to be against. Experienced teachers showed more awareness of contact outside the classroom than did trainees. A lot of understanding occurs outside the classroom, walking down the corridor . . I play the clarinet. I have just started to learn. I play with the fourth year and am not very good . . Perhaps this is understandable. Most children, have no experience of schools other than their own, have a restricted picture of what adult life or the next phase of schooling may hold for them, and often tend to favour the familiar. An educational system based entirely on pupil opinion would probably be ultraconservative. On the other hand, although children of their own accord might never have designed a microelectronics program, there are many who are capable, from their reading and from watching television, of asking why such a subject is not on offer in their own particular school.

Experienced teachers were more capable of splitting their attention between the individual they were with and the rest of the class, not afraid to break off and comment on something happening elsewhere in the room, whereas some student teachers became so engrossed in their private exchanges with pupils, that they sometimes lost their overall perception of what was happening in other parts of the room.
