Will looked up and could see it was true. The sails were full, but on deck there was but the slightest breeze. Just then Mr. Smithson came into view. He stopped in front of the Will Northaway and the Quest for Liberty 51 boy, regarding him through hostile eyes. ” Will started to scowl but thought better of it. “No sir. ” “Then go down and get your rest. ” Will had dozed off. The cry from the watch policeman, “Seven bells and all’s well,” roused him from his slumber. He jumped from his hammock, dragged on his clothes, and ran to the galley.

As soon as the helmsman called out, “Eight bells,” Will put up his broom and ran for the galley. He was dog-tired and hungry and thirsty, but a hand collared him at the galley door and jerked him back. ” Epp demanded. “To eat,” Will replied. “A glutton you must be. It’s not your hour to eat. ” Will groaned. If it had been anyone else but Epp, he would have begged a bit of food. But there was something sly and unpleasant about the one-eyed sailor, and Will would not let him see how miserable he was.
